GENESIS

A steering group with members from RBI and few south based banks was constituted. Sri. M T Krishnan Nair, then Chairman of South Indian Bank Limited was a member of the committee. Based on the recommendations of this committee, Southern India Banks Staff Training College (SIBSTC) was started at Coimbatore on 25.10.1972.



The College was inaugurated on 25th October 1972 by Dr R K Hazari, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India in the presence of Sri. Sunder Ram Shetty, Chairman, Vijaya Bank, other Chairmen member banks and dignitaries from Bankers Training College (BTC) Mumbai and National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) Pune. SIBSTC was constituted as Society and Registered on 08.02.1972 by Registrar of Assurances, Coimbatore, vide Sl. No 7 of 1972. The College was originally situated at Coimbatore, above Bank of Baroda Branch Building. With a view to enlarge the activities and to harness the expertise available with other institutions, the college was shifted to Bangalore in July 1989 at Ulsoor. The college started operating from premises at Ulsoor, Bangalore from August 1989 to June 2007.



From June 2007 till November 2013, the college operated at Jayanagar Premises in Bangalore. With a view to provide better facilities to the participants and also to enhance the training reach, the college, in November 2013 shifted to new premises on Shankara Math Road, Shankarapuram, Bangalore and is presently operating in this premises. Exceptional performance of the College in the years 2015 and onwards created a huge demand for the Trainings in the College and therefore a need had arisen to acquire one more property with Hostel facilities nearby the existing premises. Accordingly, with the permission of the Governing Board, College acquired SBI Staff Training College (erstwhile SBM STC) in August 2018.



Presently, the College is operating in 2 premises, one in Main and the other one in Annex



The College is Registered as a Society in Karnataka vide Regn S.No. 140 /91-92 dated 16.05.1991 under Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960.

Southern India Banks’ Staff Training College (known as SIBSTC in short) is one of the Premier Banking 
Related Training Academies/Institutes of the Country.  It was inaugurated by Dr R K Hazari, the then 
Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India at Coimbatore on 25.10.1972 with members from RBI and few 
south based banks.  The college was shifted to Bangalore in July 1989 and was registered as a Society 
under the Karnataka State Co-operative Societies Act. The College has now 14 Member Banks 
(comprising of both Public Sector and Private Sector Banks) and the MDs and CEOs of these Member 
Banks are on the Governing Board of the College with the Principal as its Member Secretary.  
Since its inception the College has been at the forefront of upskilling the competencies of Bank 
Employees from its Member Banks continuously. Since December 2013; after it moved fully into the 
present premises it has trained 47860 Bank Employees cutting across cadres ranging from DGMs to Sub-
staff in all verticals of Banking starting from Branch Operations to Executive Development.  
The Training Modules of the College, which are time-tested and are a result of a deep-dive Training 
Needs Analysis, cater to the Contemporary and Futuristic Training Needs.  The College has a well-
structured Training Schedule for every Training Programme which is embedded with detailed Course 
Coverage very relevant for the Topic on hand. The Training Programmes are run based on a Training 
Calendar approved by the Governing Board at the beginning of each Academic Year (April to March) 
which contain a uniformly curated bouquet of Programmes ranging from Branch Operations and 
Development/Credit/Foreign Exchange/Recovery Management/Risk Management/ Management 
Development/Marketing/ Digital Banking/Computer Lab based Trainings/Behavioural Science 
programmes aiming at improving the Soft Skills of the Trainees.  
Besides, the College has also been successfully conducting exclusive and Focus Based In-company 
Training Programmes for the Banks who specifically so desire for such programmes.  Ever since the onset 
of Covid-19; the College has embarked upon Webinar based Training Programmes also alongside the 
offline (physical training programmes) 
The Training initiatives at the SIBSTC are modelled on the “Adult- Learning Principles”. The approaches 
are a healthy and effective mixture of Class Room Lectures/ Case- Studies/Group Exercises/ Role 
Plays/Audio Video media. 
The College constantly endeavours itself to keep abreast of the latest developments in the Banking and 
Economic Sector/Regulatory Prescriptions and updated versions of these in all areas, wherever 
applicable are disseminated.  It conducts Induction Programmes for Freshers so that they could launch 
into the system effectively and Orientation/Re-fresher Training Programmes for the Experienced to 
update themselves. 
Based on the College’s Training Calendar, Member Banks nominate their eligible employees for the 
various Training Programmes announced. The College sends well curated Brochures in respect of all the 
Calendar Programmes to all HR Departments/Training Centres of the Member Banks 45 days in advance 
requesting nominations for the Training Programmes.  This communication is further followed up by 
Telephonic calls and mails. The minimum quorum for every training programme is set at 15. Updated 
Study Materials in both Hard as well as Soft-copies, as the case may be, are made available to the 
participants. At the end of each Programme, a Session-wise and a Consolidated Feedback from the 
participants are obtained. This is considered in all seriousness for the constant improvement of the 
quality of the Training Programmes. 
The Principal and the Members of Faculty are all seasoned campaigners having decades of rich 
operational and banking domain expertise. They have served well as effective Faculty Members 
/Principals/Head of Training Institutes of Banks. As such they are in a very good position to mix and 
match theoretical and practical inputs to very good effect in the Training Sessions.  Apart from this, the 
College has the good fortune and privilege of banking on a repository of external resource persons 
comprising of Past CMDs/MDs of Banks/ Alumni of leading Management Institutes like IIM Bangalore, 
Highly Accomplished and Accredited Trainers in Soft-skills and Behavioral Science Areas and Good 
Samaritans who work for the Well-being of Society like the initiators of 108 Ambulance service etc.  
The College presently operates from 2 premises; i.e. the Main Premises and the Annexe Premises (which 
is a few building blocks away from the Main Premises. The Buildings are constructed as per the specific 
requirements of the College by Sri Shankara Math Authorities who are the Landlords.  
The College has comfortable/centrally air-conditioned Class Rooms/Conference Facility with the State-of-
the Art Digital/Smart Boards etc. The Training programmes are conducted mainly on Residential basis.  
For this purpose; the College has put in place high class residential facilities for Trainees. The Hostel 
Rooms are well furnished with Centralised Air Conditioning Facility/Smart TVs and all other Amenities for 
the comfortable stay and experience of the Trainees.  The Hostel Rooms at the Main Premises and the 
Annexe Building together can comfortably accommodate about 140 people at a time.   
The College has a good collection of Books/ newspapers and periodicals in its Library.  
The College is located in the heart of the City, in the Prestigious Basavanagudi Area. It is well connected 
by Metro Rail/other means of Transport. Innumerable Shopping Centres/Religious Places/Sight-seeing 
locations/Food Streets (some historical like the Lal Bagh /Tippu Sultan Palace etc.) are all in close 
proximity to the College. The Participants can really entertain and refresh themselves in the mornings 
and evenings by visiting these places without any hindrance to the Training Sessions.
The Training Sessions start at 9.30 am every day from Monday thru Saturday (except II and IV Saturdays 
which are holidays).  In all 5 Training Sessions are conducted in 1 day with 1hour 15 minutes duration 
and liberal recess periods for Tea/Lunch.  
The Resource Complement of the College is small and compact. Apart from the Principal; there are 5 
Faculty Members / 2 Senior Personnel taking care of Accounts and Office Communications etc./ 1 Hostel 
Warden and an Office Boy.  With this modest resource Strength, the College has been able to conduct all 
its Training Initiatives remarkably well.  
The College has a qualitative Canteen, where pure vegetarian catering arrangements are made in both 
the Premises. The food is cooked inhouse and the Participants have invariably rated the same as Very 
Good/Wholesome and healthy. 
The College has a well-equipped Gym with all assistive equipment for Participants to have their Physical 
Work outs. It also has provision for games like Table Tennis/Carrom /Chess etc. 

The Participants are expected to dress up formally for the Training Sessions.   

The Participants are expected to handle the amenities provided at the College delicately. Inform the 
people at the Reception if they are going out well beyond dinner time. They are expected to refrain from 
smoking, consuming Alcohol and Non-Vegetarian food.  As a matter of principle, the College does not 
serve Non-Vegetarian Food. The Participants are expected not to entertain outsiders in their Rooms. 
They are expected to be responsible for their valuables and belongings. The Participants are expected to 
acquaint themselves well about the “Rules of Stay” of the College handed over to them while they are 
taking up the Hostel Rooms.
